Professor Hegde has taken keen interest in teaching and research and is nationally and internationally accepted as an eminent medical man in the field of Cardiology, as seen by his association with the Middlesex Hospital Medical School and University of London as Visiting Professor in Cardiology since 1982, the Commonwealth Fellowship in Cardiology, his association with the National Heart Hospital, London and the Peter Brent Brigham Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He has been actively involved in research, guiding students for the M.D. and Ph.D. Degrees of Mangalore University. He has been invited to National and International conferences to give lectures in the various areas of his field and particularly in the area of hypertension. He has an unbiased objective approach and his work in the area of hypertension has lead to less expensive treatment and less dependence on drugs. In this respect, he has been really ahead of his time since he suggested these things in his research publications in the 70's. Though people did not accept these ideas then, they have accepted his findings now and this certainly speaks volumes for Prof. Hegde. The books and research papers authored bear ample testimony to this fact and to the devotion that Prof. Hegde has towards his profession. He has taken keen interest in Medical Education and accepts assignments as examiner for MRCP in the U.K. and also he has been associated with many Indian Institutions of Medical education, learning and research. He has taken active interest in Medicine on all India basis in the field of community health and also has popularized health concepts through his ability to communicate effectively with the masses at different levels of education.
