SUGAR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DIABETES?

“There are two kinds of statistics, the kind you look up and the kind you make up.”

“Sugar has nothing to do with diabetes,” opined Richard Kahn, the chief medical and scientific officer, of the American Diabetes Association recently in an interview to the editor of an organization in America called the Consumer Alert. Thinking people will have to look at the origin of this vital new “scientific” data since we claim to live in an evidence based society of scientists! One need not go to the internet or Medline to get at the root of this statement. One has only to go to find out the deal between one of the largest candy makers and the third largest cool drinks manufacturer in the US to know how much money they had recently donated to the American Diabetic Association for their “so called” educational causes. It is now well known that the two have entered into a multi-million dollar agreement and the company has already given two million or so.

Thomas Fuller had once said that “riches enlarge, rather than satisfy appetites.” These large corporate houses stop at nothing to make more money and the medical establishment becomes a pawn in their hands. It reminds me of the past when some of the “top” scientists on tobacco related diseases after their retirement, having been bought over by the tobacco giants, had the gumption to write “scientific” articles to say that smoking has nothing to do with cancer and emphysema! Richard Kahn of the ADA falls into the same category. No one in this world needs the mink coat more than the mink, anyway. “He that maketh haste to make money is not innocent anyway, according to the Proverbs 28:20. Thinking men are by necessity uncertain. So one could always escape punishment in these areas of uncertainty.

There is a large study published in The Lancet recently that had shown a direct relationship between eating sweets, junk food and drinking sweetened drinks and diabetes mellitus. ADA has conveniently forgotten all that when the money came and had obfuscated its ethical responsibility of doing good to mankind. Gary Ruskin of the consumer alert has suggested that the ADA could be renamed as the American Junk Foods Association instead of the American Diabetic Association. When specifically asked if it is not true that sugar is directly related to diabetes, Kahn answered that there are evidences both for and against that statement and we believe they are not directly related. ADA has allowed the company to put their name on the company products, I am told.

In a very well researched book Disease Inventors, Prof. Jerg Blech from Germany, has elaborated on the way the pharmaceutical companies entice the medical “scientists” to even create diseases to sell their wares, not to speak of distorting facts about existing diseases. Just like in any other field medical field is no exception to the golden rule of making hey when the sun shines. The whole effort is to medicalise human life with deception from conception to cremation. Every effort is made to not let the “well” persons alone in society. Healthy people are goaded to have regular check ups in the fond hope of avoiding major illnesses in their “early” stages to avoid serious damage at a later date. This whole field is a big fraud on the public. For one thing there is no correct definition of normality in our science. The future predictions of human health and longevity are another myth. There is no way one could predict human future in our field. We have been predicting the unpredictable all these years to satisfy our bosses-the drug companies and instrument manufacturers. In an excellent editorial the British Medical Journal warns readers that regular check ups in the apparently healthy could be most dangerous and costly to the recipient! The false positives are so high that every one who goes for a total body scanner will have one or the other deviation that could need intervention-a good business proposition.

As if that is not enough we now have this new activity of misleading the public by the guardians of their health into believing that sugar has nothing to do with diabetes to satisfy the sugar lobby. How nice? We are now the business partners in many areas. We misuse our patients’ trust in us and because the medical world’s words carry lot of weight we are used by the industry in their effort to make money in this monetary economy. Ignorance is bliss in this area. Half knowledge is dangerous and false knowledge is fatal. Long live mankind despite the free market economy! Sugar has everything to do with diabetes both, before its onset and after that for the rest of the patient’s life.
