“JUSTICE IS INJUSTICE AND JUSTICE IS THE CONVENIENCE OF THE POWERFUL.”

This was the law in Greece at the time of Socrates. He tried his best to let people know that this was wrong and tried to show how people had been taken for a ride. His pupil Plato, in his celebrated book The Republic, graphically describes how his teacher tried to change the scenario.

Jaya Shreeyan, the editor of this wonderful publication, Issues and Concerns, is trying to do the same in India where the atmosphere today is identical to the one in Greece of Socrates’ time. The fact that the magazine survived its first five years and is stepping into the sixth year itself is proof that the editor has won the first leg of his long drawn battle against all kinds of injustice.

While it is time to congratulate the editor and pat him on the back, I feel society must support such rare efforts to cleanse the system of its poisons. Every pillar of the so- called “democracy” in India-the political outfits, the bureaucracy, the media and even the judiciary-is suspect. Only right thinking people could come forward to stem the rot. While I was putting these thoughts together I happened to see the Chief Justice designate of India speaking to the television reporters. He did voice his concern about the sad state of affairs. I hope and pray that he would set his house in order and then set about cleansing the other areas.

The worst crime in India is intellectual terrorism, where opinionated people, with vested interests, try and push their views on the gullible public, be it in the area of governance, religion, health care or, even, education. Tolerance and debate are the best things to happen to any free people. “Free man, is by necessity, insecure; and the thinking man, is by necessity, uncertain.” wrote Eric Fremm. What we need today is thinking people here.

Although we are yet to get the first rank in corruption we are not far from that distinction. Unless something is done right now, we will soon slip into a bottomless pit of corruption from where there will be no salvation. Media has a vital role to play. Unfortunately, most of our media is gagged and the editors are either fanatics or blindly hostile to the common man’s interests.

Jaya Shreeyan, bold as he is, seems to be an Oasis in this hot desert of Indian media world. May God bless him and may all thinking Indians support him.

Yours ever,
